Old Sash Weights
Lead was the main choice of sash weights during the eighteenth century, either in oblong slabs about 11/2 inches square or cylindrical pieces, by the 1800's cast iron cylindrical weights were replacing solid lead for most sash windows., it was thought that cylinders worked better in the square sash weight pockets, as the weights were less likely to interfere with each other in the tight spaces of the sash box.
Left picture - 3rd and 4th from the left are 2 Georgian lead slab weights, others are cylindrical cast iron. picture right - an original lead slab weight removed from a basement window in an old Georgian house in winchester , the window was restored and both the original weights were reinstated.
As the correct weight is vital to the efficient working of a sash window, supplemental weights were and still are used to correct any imbalance - these are known as makeweights or addweights which are generally 38mm in diameter weighing 1-2 Ibs, they are simply placed on the sash cord above the existing sash weights.
Sometimes the old cast iron cylindrical weights had a hollow bottom that could be filled with lead to make up the correct weight.
