Sash Shutters
An alternative to folding window shutters, found in late 18th and 19th century buildings, is the sliding sash shutter.
They duplicate the form of window sashes inside the room, with solid panelled shutters which are hidden in a panelled box with hinged top lid between the window sill and floor
Ring catch for lifting the box lid (Pic - 2nd right) - as in bottom pics 1st and centre.
The sliding shutters are lifted with flush drop rings in the top frames. (picture - bottom right)
Picture - middle row left - shows the 2 shutters housed within a pannelled box, the shutters can be used independently as half shutters as shown in pic - middle row centre or full shutters top pic - far right

Picture right - The pulleys for the left and right bay shutters are housed in the head of the box frames, the 4 sash weights for each shutter were housed on the left or the right hand sides of the box frame.

All Pictures were taken at a Victorian building in Southampton, where we carried out the work to the bay windows and the work to re-instate these original sash shutters which had not been working for many years..
