Sash Cords
The majority of window sashes are counterweighted so that they can be operated easily. Sashes are hung on cords which pass over pulleys and connect to weights concealed within the weight boxes in the hollow sides of the sash window case.
If your existing sash-cords are showing signs of age or decay and are covered in paint, these are all signs that the sash-cords need renewing, if they are not replaced they will eventually snap.
We use the traditional waxed cotton sash-cord which has a polyoropylene core which strengthens the cord. the wax protects the cotton and allows for self lubrication on the pulley wheel.this type of sash-cord is suited to most domestic type sash windows.
Lower Sash Cord Replacement - Sash-cord replacement requires that the sashes are removed from the frames
We would recommend if 1 sash cord is broken that you replace the other as this cord could be of a simular age and also likely to snap in the near future. if you require only 1 sash-cord to be replaced we will be happy to do so.
Upper Sash Cord Replacement
To access the upper sash we would first need to remove the lower sash, where this is the case it is advisable to replace the sash-cords to the lower sash at a small extra cost , you would then have all four cords replaced, which will last for many years. .
Where all four sash cords are replaced a basic service of the window will be carried out including removal of excess paint from sashes and frames, lubricate all the pulley wheels, balance the sashes, wax sides of sashes before re-fitting and ensure sashes are moving freely.
Sash-cords should remain freee of paint - Tip - apply vaseline on the sash-cord prior to painting, if you accidently get paint on the cords, simply wipe it off.
